MACH SERIES Jesmonite 2019-2020
This series of sculptures are made from cast jesmotine, a water-based composite material. The sculptures are each repeatedly dipped by hand into India ink, gradually building up a gradient of greys on their surface. The title of these works refers to an optical illusion where the human eye perceives exaggerated contrast between edges of slightly differing shades of gray, a phenomenon was first described by physicist Ernst Mach.
